About Cosgroves Physiotherapy Centre

Here at Cosgroves physiotherapy centre, we pride ourselves on our ability to treat many physical conditions that have proved difficult to treat using a standard physiotherapy approach. Many patients come to us with long standing chronic conditions such as lower back pain and have been down every standard avenue of treatment, usually with a varied array of diagnoses, all to no avail.

Our first approach is to empathise with their situation, but then to offer them the hope that in most instances our treatment methods can work for them when others have failed. Stuart Cosgrove has been practicing physiotherapy for 36 years now and after thousands of situations like this, he has never failed to derive satisfaction at being able to help these people return to a satisfactory quality of life.

At Cosgroves physiotherapy centre, we have a very ‘hands on’ approach using a varied array of soft-tissue and manipulative techniques, along with acupuncture to treat muscular and skeletal problems. We have an extensively equipped gym, built alongside our clinic which allows us to develop rehabilitation programs for patients to return to normal activities in the shortest possible time.

We also pride ourselves on our team strategy methods of working. All the physios work closely together to make sure the same quality of care is administered to all patients. We regularly have team meetings and seminars to maintain our continued professional development and to keep abreast of the latest research studies in our field of work.

I, myself when I was first developing our methods had a mentor whom I trusted and who moulded my way of thinking. I have done the same with all the physios on our team and I am very proud of what we have accomplished so far and the results we are getting! Whenever I myself, am injured I am proud to say I can rely on any one of them to treat me effectively and usually do!

Cosgroves Physiotherapy Centre has been established for over 20 years.

Cosgroves Physiotherapy Centre Services

Cosgroves Physiotherapy Centre offers a diverse range of treatments carefully planned to suit the patients individual needs. What makes Cosgroves different from other practices in the area is our ‘one stop approach’. Not only do we carry out treatments under the supervision of one of the countries leading physiotherapists, but we have a fully equipped rehabilitation gymnasium, red light and UVA treatment areas.

We also have qualified nutritionists and sports rehabilitators also on site to cover all the patients needs.

John Ramsay, Charlotte MacGill and Tom Shaw, alongside their degree qualifications have all trained under Stuart in all aspects of physiotherapy and together, we all make a formidable team! We work hard as a team on continuous professional development, holding regular seminars together to keep us at the forefront of knowledge.

Together, we will literally ‘Hold your Hand’ and make you “the patient” feel secure every moment of the way! A pain free patient is a happy patient!

Physiotherapy and Prevention

At Cosgroves we pride ourselves on our ‘Hands On’ approach. We utilise many treatment modalities and combine an Eastern/Western methodology. We find marrying acupuncture techniques with manipulative techniques works best.
We also combine American osteopathic active release with European myofascial release techniques to treat soft tissues such as muscle, ligament and tendons. We treat all types of musculoskeletal problems from everyday sprains to top level athletic injuries.

We also take an holistic approach when it comes to treatment of spinal problems, many of which may occur due to incorrect posture. We look at the lifestyle of our patients and offer advice and home treatment once we have the problem under control.

Wherever possible, rather than discouraging a particular activity the patient wants to engage in, we try to help the patient find ways to resume the activity with minimal risk of injury re-occurrence. We consider it our professional duty to try to allow the patient to resume their activities following injury wherever possible and continue our input and advice further down the line to prevent further problems.

Because all the physio’s in our clinic have been high end strength athletes themselves, they can all speak from experience when it comes to injuries! Included in our treatment arsenal is a highly equipped gymnasium which can be utilised to rehabilitate injuries or take the patient to a higher level of fitness following injury repair.

Preventative Treatment

The technical term for this is prophylactic care or treatment. Once the mechanism for injury is highlighted, steps can be taken to prevent this occurring again. This might be by offering ongoing maintenance therapy or a home program which can be continued in the patients local gym facility. Very often, with regard to spinal or low back pain, a postural problem may be highlighted. Once the mechanical cause of pain is treated, then a home program may be given followed by intermittent maintenance therapy to prevent the situation arising in an acute form again. We find this approach can keep patients going for years in the majority of cases without an acute flare up again!

End Stage Rehabilitation

As our physiotherapy staff are much more highly trained than your average personal trainer, you can rely on them to advise you on the best program to achieve an even higher level of fitness than you had prior to the injury. These final stage rehab sessions can be conducted on a one to one basis and as a patient you will be able to take advantage of our specially designed gym to get you back to full fitness.

We are all available for this service and when you consider our credentials, you can rest assured you will have access to some of the best advice around.

Charlotte MacGill

Multiple National title holder in Bodybuilding Toned and Athletic Figure categories including a Miss Universe title. Charlotte is also available for bodybuilding advice for women including contest prep, diet and posing.

Stuart Cosgrove

Former Mr Britain and UK title holder. Stuart was a physio to and trained with multiple Mr Olympia title holder Dorian Yates. His interests lie in strength training and he lectured at Bolton University on the Masters Strength and Conditioning course.

John Ramsay

John also has personal training and nutrition qualifications as well as his physio degree and was a high placing bodybuilder coming 3rd in the North West Britain, qualifying for the British championships.

Tom Shaw

Tom was a former professional footballer who now has an interest in strength and conditioning, particularly functional strength. He has qualifications in sports rehabilitation and pitch-side trauma, so he understands the importance of end stage rehab to get the patient back to full fitness.

Personal Training

Our therapists are all trained in sports rehabilitation, strength and conditioning and as such are trained to a higher level than most personal trainers. When patients have fully rehabilitated from their injury, some of them want to take this further and progress their strength and fitness to a higher level. This option is available to them at Cosgroves with a wealth of experience on hand from former British and World Champions.

Nutrition Plans

We believe a diet must be bespoke for that person and as such anyone requiring a nutrition program fills a questionnaire in first so we can assess their needs and work out their own metabolism.

Red Light Therapy

When you consider the old Infra Red lamps we used to use for our aching backs, they were only useful to a degree. They didn’t penetrate into deep tissues and to get any decent level of radiation you had to practically burn yourself!! These lamps emitted infra red and visible red light over a large band of wavelengths so it was always difficult to get enough of the BENEFICIAL wavelengths of light.

  • Accelerates healing of muscles, tendons and ligaments
  • Reduces the inflammation of arthritis
  • Reduces scar tissue, blemishes and wrinkles
  • Aids in recovery from intense exercise
  • Helps improve metabolism for increased fat loss

Recent studies conducted by Harvard Professor Michael Hamblin who specialises in the effects of this type of radiation found that wavelengths of 640-660 and 830 to 860 nm were beneficial to superficial tissues like skin and deep tissues like muscle and bone.

There was a massive hike in mitochondrial activity in cells at these wavelengths when 60 joules of energy was applied to these tissues. The benefits achieved have been well documented in over 300 scientific studies and are irrefutable!! Benefits like reduced inflammation, pain relief, and wound healing within days of use.

This means the red light may be used on anything from skin wrinkles and acne to deeper conditions such as muscle tears and arthritis. It also means a massive improvement in overall recovery after intense exercise. Due to the tremendous hike in metabolism people also notice an increase in fatloss whilst on a calorie reduced diet.

Because the light we use – The Joov Light delivers clinical grade radiation, you will receive approximately 60 Joules of energy within 10 minutes when sitting or standing about 6 inches from the device.

UVA light therapy

At Cosgroves, we use a highly effective UVA treatment booth which surrounds the body. The tubes emit only UVA without the more dangerous UVB light. Due to an alarming increase in rickets in the UK, patients suffer from a serious lack of vitamin D. These patients also suffer seasonal affected disorder, feeling depressed.

This treatment cures both these problems in a matter of a few minutes, 2 to 3 times a week! It is also a great treatment for acne!

Specialised Conditions

As we have been a busy physiotherapy clinic for over 30 years, we come across certain conditions which are not normally treated by physiotherapists. Many of these patients cannot get the help they need from traditional medical sources. Some of these conditions cannot be adequately treated by medication or surgery, so they find it difficult to find an appropriate, effective method of treatment. We at Cosgroves have seen the need and have risen to the occasion!

Here is a short list of some of the conditions we can treat and the modality of treatment we use:

VERTIGO – We use a combination of acupuncture , manipulation and Apley/ Sermont’s method of treatment as appropriate.
TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA – We have had tremendous success treating this condition with a specific acupuncture protocol, preventing surgery and over medication.
BELL’s PALSY – We use a combination of acupuncture and muscle stimulation to stimulate nerve and muscle recovery.
TENSION HEADACHES – Very often misdiagnosed as migraines, we treat these very successfully with acupuncture and manipulation, followed by postural protocol.
THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME – Patients presenting with referred pain and numbness in the arm(s) can often be misdiagnosed as a neck disc problem when it can be this syndrome. When correctly diagnosed, this condition can be effectively treated with acupuncture, manipulation, mobilisation and postural control.
SPORTS MASSAGE – We offer sports massages as a preventative measure or a recuperative aid for sports men/women. we utilise deep and superficial techniques such as myofascial release, effleurage, deep kneading, petrissage and percussion to help release tight soft tissue structures and also aid blood flow and venous drainage to allow patients to return to maximum performance again. We also have a G5 Massage machine which allows deep vibratory massage and can be used within the treatment session if necessary.
MASSAGE CHAIRS – Our massage chairs give a surprisingly deep all over back and legs massage and are very often used by patients coming home from work after a hard day or indeed by patients relatives whilst waiting . They offer a great 20 minute session in varying degrees of recumbence and can really take the stress out of tired bodies!
