Tayto History

Founded by Thomas Hutchinson in 1956, Tayto Group is the largest British-owned crisp and snack manufacturer, producing over five million bags a day across our seven UK sites.

From our home in Tayto Castle, Tandragee in the rolling hills of County Armagh in Northern Ireland, Tayto Group has grown to be a £200 million business with a portfolio of much-loved brands including Golden Wonder, Mr Porky and REAL Hand cooked Crisps as well as Tayto, Northern Ireland’s number one crisp brand.

These brands have been at the forefront of new ideas in snacks including Golden Wonder being the first to launch Ready Salted crisps 1960 as well as creating iconic crisps such as Tayto Cheese & Onion and Golden Wonder Ringos. We were among the first in our industry to move to sunflower oil for frying instead of palm oil. Innovation remains at the heart of the business as we develop the snacks of the future as well as continuing to make the snacks that we all love and have grown up with – take Midland Snacks Pork Scratchings, beloved of generations and still handmade in the Midlands.

Operating from 6 sites across the UK, Tayto Group is Britain’s largest family owned snack manufacturer making us the country’s 3rd largest snack manufacturer. We produce over 5 million packs every day and have ‘Snacking Sorted’ with our unique portfolio of branded and retailer-branded snacks ranging from crisps, through every conceivable snack to pork scratchings and popcorn. Tayto Potato Expertise

Tayto Group are proud to support British local farming and support over 70 farmers across the British Isles, some of whom have been growing potatoes for us for over 60 years. We use over 1600 tonnes of potatoes a week and our potatoes are delivered fresh daily. The majority of our potatoes are from the fertile lands of Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and North East Ireland.

We select potatoes for their taste, crunch and crisping capabilities and are experts in farming potatoes to make the perfect crisps. We select from a short list of around 20 specialist crisping varieties, our core varieties include 4 ‘Ladies’: Lady Valora, Lady Jo, Lady Claire, Lady Rosetta, Verdi, Taurus, Olympus, Opal, Saturna and Sassy.

Tayto Brands

Golden Wonder

Whilst almost everyone knows of Golden Wonder, not as many are aware that the company was born back in 1947 in Stockbridge Edinburgh, when local baker William Alexander started frying sliced potatoes in the afternoon once he’d finished baking for the day. He decided to name his new crisps after the Golden Wonder potato variety and the well-know and much loved brand was born. With firsts such as the launch of Ready Salted crisp in 1960 and Cheese & Onion crisps in 1962, Golden Wonder became the largest crisps company in Britain in 1966. The portfolio continued to grow and brands like Ringos, Transform-A-Snack, Rough Cuts, and more recently the smarter snacking Light & Loaded brands, were launched into the golden wonder-fully flavoured range of crisps and snacks.

Set deep in the heart of Ulster’s countryside in Co. Armagh is Tayto Castle, where Tayto have been making some of the world’s best loved crisps and snacks since 1956.

We are a multiple award-winning, family-owned brand who pride ourselves on using quality local ingredients and materials to produce great-tasting crisps and snacks for everyone to enjoy. Its ‘Taste of Home’ campaign marking NI Year of Food & Drink, during which the iconic brand celebrated its 60th anniversary, was named Best Marketing Campaign at the Ulster Grocer Awards.

An enduring feature of Tayto has been Mr. Tayto, the brand’s lovable mascot – a well-known and much-loved face which is recognised across Northern Ireland and beyond.

Tayto is a leading player in the Northern Ireland food sector and a major employer, with over 300 employees working at the Tayto Castle in Tandragee.

Tayto has had a zero waste to landfill policy in place for many years and it continues to invest heavily to improve its sustainability levels. For example, recently implementing new packaging which is suitable for recycling, in partnership with Terracycle.

Tayto supports charities in the local community, including Marie Curie and the local soap box derby. Tayto will soon be launching a new approach to how it manages its charitable relationships to create a wider and more positive impact.

Tayto works with all levels of schools in Northern Ireland to deliver tours of Tayto castle which outline career options in the food manufacturing industry, encourage interest in the sector and explain production techniques.

Real Crisps

Originally REAL was founded in 1977 as a Welsh brand, Tayto passionately believed that these quality crisps with their stand out flavours deserved to travel the border. Today REAL is found in cafes and licensed premises across the UK and can even be found in the Far East and Australia. Tayto acquired REAL Hand cooked crisps in 2007.

REAL is hand cooked in Northamptonshire, the heart of England, using British potatoes, whenever the harvests allow, and 100% Rapeseed and Sunflower Oils. Most of the potatoes are from a 30 mile radius of the factory and we take in fresh deliveries daily to help meet our high quality requirements.

REAL Hand cooked crisps are batch cooked, taking 3 times longer than a standard conventional crisp and are stirred by hand to prevent clumping and to ensure every crisp is evenly cooked.

REAL Hand cooked range boasts unique punchy meaty flavours including Ham & English Mustard and Roast Ox. We also have the stalwart of popular flavours; Sea Salt, Strong Cheese & Onion and Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar and for those who like it hot we’ve Sweet Chilli and Jalapeno.

Mr Porky

Pork Scratchings are the uber pub snack, no other snack can match the textures, meaty flavours and saltiness of the indulgent, traditional British Pork Scratching. The memories of your first pork scratching are held for years, decades even, so crunching on a pork scratching brings with it emotions from days gone by, making them a truly a unique snack.

Made in Bolton, in the north west of England, we use only BRC accredited suppliers of the finest quality pork rind to ensure we achieve that satisfying bite and crunch that makes a great pork scratching.

The Mr Porky range includes sharing and impulse packs, multipacks in the larger supermarket stores as well as clip-strips, pillow packs and pub cards for ease of display in food service outlets.

Midland Snacks

Using a time-honoured recipe, Midland Snacks are crafted by gently hand cooking the finest rind to create the most traditional of pork scratchings so beloved in the Great British pub.

We’re stayed true to the original recipe and method of cooking as we truly believe this is the best way to make the best traditional scratching and are really proud to say that Midland Snacks has received a 2-star 2019 Great Taste Award. Having our scratchings recognised by food industry experts is truly an honour, proving that sometimes the traditional way is best!

The Real Pork Co

Pork scratchings are the ‘uber snack’ but they aren’t for everybody. By double-cooking by hand, in small batches, using a recipe with no nasties, The Real Pork Co. has re-imagined this traditional salty snack. With all the taste but with lighter textures and a contemporary feel, this is pork perfection for a new generation. [No embarrassment here]

The Real Pork Crackling Co

The brand launched in 1975 in Tamworth in the Midlands, following the acquisition of the Green Top Snacks brands and in turn was acquired by Tayto in 2019.

Today the Real Pork Crackling Company is well known for its light pork crunch product and it’s more traditional pork crackling.

The brand is all about simple, straightforward, no nonsense pork snacking, available as sharing bags and as individual portion size on clipstrips.
